Sifted's inaugural list combines data-driven analysis with expert evaluation to spotlight startups tackling complex challenges. The range of sectors is vast - everything from biotech and robotics to enterprise productivity through AI email assistants.
It isn’t about who raised the most capital. Instead, Sifted's judges (including editorial leadership and intelligence analysts, alongside sponsor N47) prioritized boldness, originality and momentum.
To qualify for the AI 100, startups needed to meet strict criteria:
- Founded in 2018 or later
- Valued between $25M and $999M
- Headquartered in Europe (across 32 eligible countries)
- AI at the core of the product or infrastructure, not just a background optimization tool
The average company that made the list was founded in 2022 and employs just 75 people.
